Danish Kaneria faced harassment for being Hindu

Fear, trauma, anguish, trepidation. Minorities in Pakistan have experienced it all. It is a well-established fact that minorities like Hindus, Christians, among others, are discriminated against in the neighbouring country.

Time and again various reports have only highlighted the plight and miseries of the Pakistan minorities, especially Hindus.

The recent revelation of former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar about ex-cricketer Danish Kaneria has once again brought to the fore the persecution of religious minorities in Pakistan.

During a chat show, Akhtar revealed that the Pakistani cricket team was 'unfair to Danish Kaneria as he was a Hindu'. Speaking in a talk programme named 'Game on Hai' on a TV channel, Akhtar said that Kaneria was mistreated in the team and the co-players many times refused to even eat with him.

“Danish had been Hindu. So it had been unjust to him. Some players had reservations about the reason why he consumes meals with us? ” Shoaib revealed.

Kaneria was the second Hindu after Anil Dalpat to represent the Pakistan cricket team in international cricket. He played 61 Test matches for Pakistan and took 261 wickets. He took 15 wickets in 18 ODIs for the team.

The former leg-spinner was handed a lifetime ban by the England and Wales Cricket Board in 2012 over spot-fixing allegations in a NatWest Pro40 game. In 2016, the members of a parliamentary committee had alleged that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is not helping Kaneria in his fight against lifetime ban as he belongs to Hindu community.
